Two Iranian Health Workers Abducted by U.S. in Kosovo Released
"The two are in good health and thanks to efforts made they have joined their families," the Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hamid Reza Assefi told IRNA here yesterday. Dr. Reza Nik-Sirat, together with two other members of a humanitarian mission in Kosovo, was arrested by some U.S. personnel affiliated to NATO peacekeeping forces in Balkans.
The three were arrested by U.S. forces as they headed for Iran's Medicare Center from the Relief Headquarters' Bureau in the City of Pristina. They were detained along with some nationals of other countries between July 19-22.
One of the Iranian nationals was freed afterwards following Iran's diplomatic efforts. Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi has sent a message to Kofi Annan calling for help in obtaining the release of the Iranians.
Relying on a false report carried by Associated Press (AP), the Islamic Republic of Iran's Broadcasting (IRIB) had announced that the two Iranians were freed by KFOR. However, the IRIB reporter in Balkans later denied the story.
The arrest took place two days before President George W. Bush visited U.S. troops in the province.
