WASHINGTON -- The Washington Wizards dipped into the NBA free agent market on Thursday signing guard Larry Hughes to a three year deal.

Terms of the contract were not disclosed but published reports place Hughes's starting salary at $4.5 million.

In 56 starts last season with the Golden State Warriors Hughes averaged 12.5 points per game, Reuters reported.

"We are very happy we were able to tap into the free agent market and get a quality player like Larry Hughes," said Wizards Chairman Abe Pollin. "He is another good addition to our young nucleus here in Washington."

The 6-foot 5-inch Hughes adds some badly needed size to the Wizards' backcourt that also includes Tyronn Lue, Chris Whitney and Washington's top pick in this year's draft Juan Dixon, from the national champion Maryland Terrapins.
