Al-Shabab, Instrument of Uday Power
The "Al-Shabab" TV network which was directly under the supervision of Saddam's elder son, Uday, had been turned into a mouthpiece to propagate his meetings and activities.
In 1990, Uday issued a decree to "Latif Nasif Jasem" the incumbent information minister to send all the government and private commercial advertisements to "Al-Shabab" TV network and "Babel" newspaper.
Under the influence of Uday's propaganda, in a fraudulent parliamentary election, he was elected first in Baghdad constituency. Hence, he took the control of Iraq's good-for-nothing parliament into his hands which was chaired by "Saadoon Hamadi".
"Sadoon Hamadi", a shia from Karbala, who held an eight-year old tenure of Iraq's foreign ministry referred to Uday as the true chairman of Iraq's parliament.
Sadoon Hamadi who played a significant role in conclusion of the well-known 1975 Algiers Treaty with the Pahlavi regime, triggered Saddam to violate the convention in 1979 and impose a war on Iran.
His age was twice that of Uday, but did not dare to do anything without his permission.
Another Iraqi figure who was deeply under the influence of Uday and obeyed his orders unequivocally was Ali Hassan Al-Majid.
He, who was Saddam's cousin, became prominent due to chemical bombardment of Kurdestan in "Anfal" operation as well as Halabja which gave him the title of Chemical Ali.
He held many positions such as Ministry of Interior, deputy prime minister, head of security organization and commander of operations in southern Iraq.
In 1991, Ali Hassan Al-Majid with the help of forces known as "Jeish Asshabi" (National Militia) savagely suppressed the Intifada of Iraqis in southern Iraq, called the Shaban Intifada.
As a result of this attack, more than 150,000 Shias of Iraq lost their lives and many more were left homeless.
Ali Hassan Al-Majid spread fear among Iraqi people and the Baath officials so that no one dared to decline his orders. Relying on government power and income from advertisements and huge commercial contracts, Uday transferred billions of dollars to his personal bank accounts outside Iraq.
