Saudi Diplomat Murdered in Australia

October 15, 1998 - 0:0
CANBERRA Police were Wednesday, investigating the murder of a Saudi diplomat whose body was found in pool of blood in his Canberra apartment. A statement from the Saudi embassy said the dead man was its First Secretary Abdullah Al Ghamdi. Yesterday, (Tuesday) the 13th of October, 1998, the First Secretary at the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia, Mr Abdullah Al Ghamdi did not appear or phone the embassy, the statement said.

A member of the diplomatic mission was sent to his residence and after the door was opened, Al-Gahmdi was found lying on the floor in the kitchen in a pool of blood. The police were called in and have started the investigations. While the embassy wishes to know the reasons behind his murder as soon as possible, it gratefully appreciates the big efforts that the federal police are working on.

The Australian Federal Police would only say a work colleague found the middle-aged man dead in an apartment close to parliament house late Tuesday and the death was being treated as suspicious. At this stage our city crime team is investigating, a police spokesman said. It is still classed as suspicious, because we have not established the circumstances leading up to the death.

Police were seen early Wednesday searching a field near parliament house, some distance from where the body was found. At this stage it does not appear the killing was politically motivated, with a spokesman for the Saudi embassy saying he was not aware of any stepped up security measures. There is nothing yet, it is the same procedures, the spokesman said.
