Lemerre Sticks With Euro 2000 Winners
August 9, 2000 - 0:0
PARIS France Coach Roger Lemerre on Tuesday named his victorious 22-man European championship squad for a charity match against a FIFA world stars side.
Lemerre will use the gala match at the Stade Velodrome in Marseille on August 16 to thank the players who triumphed at Euro 2000 last month by beating Italy 2-1 in the final.
The game will mark the final appearance in a French jersey of defender Laurent Blanc and could also be midfielder Didier Deschamps's last appearance for his country.
Deschamps, recently transferred from Chelsea to Valencia in Spain, has yet to decide on his international future.
Lemerre will wait until France play England in a friendly in Paris on September 2 to begin remolding his side ahead of their 2002 World Cup defense in Japan and South Korea.
The Marseille match is being played to benefit the SOS-Children's Villages Charity.
The FIFA world stars team will include Italian Roberto Baggio, Argentine Fernando Redondo, Liberian George Weah and talented Japanese player Hidetoshi Nakata.
The FIFA world stars will be coached by Carlos Queiroz of Portugal.
