IRGC intelligence arm foiled recent US-Israeli plot against Iran: statement

January 23, 2026 - 20:25

TEHRAN - Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) says part of the recent large-scale Israeli-American conspiracy against the Islamic Republic of Iran ended in failure thanks to the preparedness of the country’s security forces and the vigilance of the people.

“These acts of terror had been engineered as a sequel to the 12-day [US-Israeli] war and were carried out hastily, triggered by the strategic defeats of the hegemonic system,” said the IRGC in a statement.

The enemy set up a command center comprised of 10 hostile intelligence services to touch off civil turmoil, military intervention, and activities by hostile groups to pose an existential threat to Iran, read the statement.

Elsewhere in its statement, the IRGC underlined that operations by its intelligence arm netted hundreds of elements with ties to “anti-security networks” as well as hundreds of illegal weapons.

Recently, the enemies provoked riots in the country through their trained operatives and mercenaries, leading to the killing of 2,427 innocent fellow citizens, including security forces and people from various strata. The armed rioters vandalized public property and triggered terror. They hijacked peaceful protests by a number of business owners over depreciation of the national currency and market instability, mostly caused by illegal US sanctions.

To tackle the unrest, security forces immediately went into action and firmly dealt with rioters and foreign-backed insurgents, making numerous arrests.

Security forces also seized various types of lethal weapons intended for use against civilians and government facilities.

The operatives had been tasked by foreign spy agencies and hostile groups to carry out targeted assassinations of elite figures, stir ethnic divisions, and sabotage vital infrastructure such as water, electricity, gas, and oil pipelines.

Many analysts as well as Iranian authorities are of the conviction that the terrorist acts and riots were, in fact, the continuation of the 12-day US-Israeli war against Iran back in June 2025.

Iranian officials have said, time and again, that the US and the Israeli regime orchestrated the unrest in revenge for the failure they suffered during the 12-day war.

On June 13, 2025, Israel launched a blatant and unprovoked act of aggression against Iran, triggering a 12-day war that killed well over 1,000 people in the country, including military commanders, nuclear scientists, and ordinary civilians. The United States also entered the war directly by bombing three Iranian nuclear sites in a grave violation of international law.

In response, the Iranian military targeted strategic sites across the occupied territories as well as the al-Udeid air base in Qatar, the largest American military base in West Asia.
