GENEVA Magistrates in Geneva have opened an inquiry after a 16-month-old baby was left to starve to death following her mother's detention on a shoplifting charge. Police found the baby's corpse at her home on June 1, nearly a month after the mother's arrest, AFP reported. "When she was detained, the woman hushed up the fact that she was the mother of a little girl. The social services only became concerned about the child's whereabouts several days later," police said in a statement. They also described the 22 year-old mother as jobless, single and a drug addict, but the affair has triggered a row about how the child was abandoned.
