Why Are Some People Left-Handed?
August 9, 2001 - 0:0
Although most people are right-handed, some are left-handed, and a few can use one hand as well as the other. We say these people are ambidextrous. Not all scientists agree on what causes these differences. But Many think this is the answer: Each side of your brain controls the muscles on the opposite side of your body. In most people the left side of the brain is more powerful (dominant) than the right side. These people have better control over the muscles on their right side. If the left side of your brain is dominant, you are right-handed. If the right side of your brain is dominant, you are left-handed. If both sides of your brain are about equal, you may be ambidextrous. Not very long ago, parents and teachers used to try and change left-handed children into right-handed children. Today scientists know that it is best for left-handed children to stay the way they are. Forcing them to use their right hand confuses the two sides of the brain.
