Mavericks End 13-Year LA Drought
The Mavericks, who had not won a game in Los Angeles since December 12 1990, took an early lead, dominated for much of the game and then survived a determined Laker comeback attempt in the fourth quarter before pulling away again to win.
Los Angeles saw its 10-game winning streak snapped and was handed its first loss at the Staples Center this season. The Lakers had reeled off 27 consecutive regular season home wins, last losing in Los Angeles last February.
Dallas also ended a five-game losing streak at the hands of the Lakers and beat LA for just the sixth time in the last 52 meetings between the teams in the regular season. Dallas is just 3-7 on the road this season.
Emotions were high all night, the residue of Laker Karl Malone's elbowing of Steve Nash in the last meeting between the two teams, which earned him a one-game suspension.
Gary Payton of the Lakers was ejected with 4:50 left in the first quarter after contesting a technical foul and harsh words were exchanged all night.
Nash grabbed 23 points for Dallas, while Josh Howard added 17 points and 13 rebounds. Shaquille O'Neal led the Lakers with 25 points and 14 rebounds.
