LONDON (AFP) -- English Premiership club Tottenham announced the signing of Ivory Coast midfielder Didier Zokora from St. Etienne on Friday.

Zokora, 25, became one of the hottest properties at this summer's World Cup with a series of impressive displays against the likes of Argentina and Holland.

Tottenham manager Martin Jol was keen to land Zokora as he prepares his team for a renewed assault on the Premiership's top four as well as taking the club into the UEFA Cup.

Former Genk star Zokora had made it clear he wanted to leave the French first division team after the World Cup and told Tottenham's website: "I am very proud to come here and I think it is a great club.

"I am extremely happy because I think there are a lot of really good players here and I am glad to be joining them. "The core of the team is very young and we can build for the long term. This is something which really attracted me to the club."

Jol added: "Didier was regarded by a lot of people as one of the best midfield players going into the World Cup and he proved that in the group stage.

"A lot of clubs were after him, we had to compete for his services and he is a very good signing."

Zokora's signing could herald the departure of the team's England midfielder Michael Carrick, who has already been the subject of a 10 million pounds (18 million dollars) bid from Manchester United.
