BUCHAREST (Xinhua) -- Romania will not send military forces to southern Lebanon, said President Traian Basescu after the Supreme Defense Council's assembly met on Monday.

"We decided that Romania will not involve with military troops in southern Lebanon, but we will participate in the reconstruction effort if the Romanian companies find contracts," said the head of state.

He said that Romania currently has three battalions in Iraq, Afghanistan, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Kosovo. He explained that two battalions are ready in Romania for each battalion involved in operations abroad.

"At NATO's request Romania has prepared a battalion over the past three weeks, so Romania's military capacity for international operations amounts to 12 battalions," Basescu said.

Romania remains available in case solicitations are made and will analyze a participation according to the military and financial situation, said the President.

Basescu said that the decision of the Supreme Defense Council corresponds to the realities in Romania today.

Most of Romania's parliamentary parties have favorably reacted to the decision on Monday of the Supreme Defense Council regarding the non-involvement of Romanian troops in southern Lebanon, according to the Romanian Rompres news agency.
