Intl. transit via Iran increases by 25%

TEHRAN, March 4 (MNA) – International transit of cargo through Iran during the first 10 months of the current Iranian calendar year (started March 21, 2006) has increased by 25 percent compared with the past year.

Overall, the Iran’s TIR (Transports Internationaux Routiers, meaning international road transport) carnet and non-TIR carnet in the period hit Rls.98,709.9 billion, a report on Sunday quoted Iran’s Customs Administration as reporting that the value of the international transportation via the nation during the same period last year, had amounted to Rls.78,989.8 billion.

Cargo transit through Iran in the same period hit 4,485.3,000 tons, which shows a 10.8 percent rise in terms of weight compared with the same period last year.

Fuels accounted for 17.5 percent, foodstuffs (11 percent) and automobiles (1.9 percent) of the weight of the total non-TIR carnet international cargos transported through the nation in the same period, the report added.

TIR carnet is a customs transit document permitting facilitation of international trade and international road transport. The TIR convention offers international trade and transport system with maximum facility to move goods in sealed vehicles or containers from a customs office of departure in one country to a customs office of destination in another country without requiring extensive and time-consuming border checks at intermediate borders at a cost-effective price.
