TEHRAN – The U.S. efforts to make a unipolar international system are doomed to failure, Expediency Council Chairman Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani said here Monday.

“After the fall of Soviet Union, the United States thought that the world would become unipolar, but the Islamic world, Russian, China, Europe, India, and Non-Aligned Movement members are the powers that will influence global decisions,” Rafsanjani said in a meeting with the head of the Russian Federation Council Foreign Affairs Committee Mikhail Margelov.

Rafsanjani criticized Russia for delaying the completion of the Bushehr nuclear power plant.

“Extra-regional powers are seeking to trample upon Iran’s inalienable right by controlling the international organization and we expect our friends to prevent such actions,” he said.

The Islamic Republic of Iran believes that the regional countries can establish a proper security system to promote peace without foreign interference.

Margelov said that Iran is one of Russia’s important partners, adding that expansion of mutual ties can help both countries to adopt more convergent policies.

Russia respects Iran’s right to civilian nuclear energy, he added.
