Larijani meets Iraqi PM in Baghdad
So far he has had talks with Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki and Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SCIRI) Chairman Abdul-Aziz Hakim.
Maliki’s office issued a statement saying the Iraqi prime minister thanked Iran for agreeing to participate in the Sharm el-Sheikh conference.
Larijani promised that Iran would invest in Iraq’s electricity grid and provide fuel supplies, according to the statement.
“He also said Iran has been at the forefront in assisting the Iraqi government and people since the fall of the dictatorial system, and those countries that want security and stability in the region must support the elected government of Iraq,” the statement added.
Media outlets have reported that talks to obtain the release of the five Iranian diplomats who were arrested in Irbil are on the top of the agenda.
U.S. troops stormed the Iranian consulate in the northern Iraqi city of Irbil on January 11 and arrested five diplomats under the pretext that they were fomenting violence in Iraq.
