BUCHAREST (Xinhua) -- Romania's main opposition Social Democratic Party (PSD) called for the formation of a new government, citing the current cabinet's poor performance.

""The current Tariceanu Cabinet must leave, because it is deaf and blind to the people's needs,"" said Mircea Geoana, leader of the PSD in Baia-Mare, 550 km northwest of the capital Bucharest.
A future government should implement a set of coherent public policies, Geoana said, blaming the present government for being ""slow and late"" in action. The government is unable to carry out the things it has started, he added.
The PSD, the largest opposition party in parliament, decided at an informal meeting on Tuesday to file a censure motion on Sept. 10 at the earliest.
Once the motion is passed by parliament, the PSD will consult with the other parties as well as the head of state on setting up a new government, Geoana has said.
The present government ""has lost the electorate's confidence and had a poor performance in solving the fundamental problems of the Romanians,"" Geoana said at the meeting.
PSD party members, confident the motion would be passed, consider it an stepping stone to power.
Romania has been gripped by a months-long political crisis triggered by the long-running power struggle between the prime minister and the president. Basescu, who was accused of usurping the power of prime minister and violating the constitution, survived an impeachment referendum on May 19, as 74 percent of voters cast ballots against his removal from office.
In recent months, the minority government led by Prime Minister Popescu-Tariceanu has lost support from the PSD
