President Withdraws Complaints Against `Shalamche', `Ya-Lesarat'

TEHRAN President Mohammad Khatami here Sunday withdrew his complaints against managing directors of bi-weekly Shalamche and monthly Ya-Lesarat al-Hossein. The managers of two magazines were expected to go on trial in Tehran Public Court Branch 1410 Monday (today) on defamation charges and viloation of elections law as raised by President Khatami. Head of the President's Office Mohammad Abtahi in a reply letter to head of the court said, ``It is better for all of us, specially the officials, to be a symbol of Islamic patience and self-restraint.'' ``We should even try to tolerate such disloyalties and consider it as a price for institutionalizing criticisms and freedom within the framework of law,'' said Abtahi. The letter added that due to the society's need for increasing the tolerance of individuals and social groups, President Khatami has withdrawn his complaints against the managing directors of Shalamche and Ya-Lesarat al-Hossein.
