Solana: ME peace failure due to slow pace
September 16, 2008 - 0:0
European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana has discussed the peace process with Palestinian Authority Chief Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah.
Javier Solana met the Palestinian authorities in Ramallah as the second leg of his Middle East tour. Solana started his visit on Friday in Israel where he held talks with Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni. The European Union's foreign policy chief after his meetings with Israeli and Palestinian officials said that he was ""less and less optimistic” that Israel and the Palestinians would meet a goal of a peace deal this year but he urged both sides to keep up momentum in 2009.
Efforts to reach an agreement had started too slowly, Javier Solana said in an interview. ""Probably this is the mistake that has been made,” he said.
In Ramallah, Abbas told Solana that he was working to reach a final peace agreement on all the core issues. He said he would never accept a partial agreement, or postpone any of the core issues, chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat told reporters after the meeting.
""Either an agreement on everything, and particularly on Jerusalem
[al-Quds], or no agreement at all,"" Erekat quoted Abbas as saying.
Peace talks between the Israeli regime and Palestinian Authority revived after a seven-year hiatus at the U.S.-hosted Annapolis conference in November, where President George W. Bush expressed strong hope that a full peace deal will be finalized by the time he leaves office in January 2009 .
""We will use our power to help you as you come up with the necessary decisions to lay out a Palestinian state,” Bush promised a day after the conference ended.
However, little progress is visible on the ground as Israel fails to honor its promises made in the conference and refuses to make any compromise on core issues including status of Beit-ul-Moqaddas, the fate of Palestinian refugees and final borders.
Under the road map peace plan Israel has committed not to establish new settlements in East Beit-ul-MOqaddas and West Bank, but it keeps on building in the Palestinian land and destroying Palestinian houses.
Palestinian senior officials have described the Israeli move as the main reason behind the failure of the peace process, while Washington has not exercised its 'power' and influence to pressure Tel Aviv into fulfilling its pledges.
Erekat said Abbas will meet U.S. President George W Bush in the White House on September 25.
