December 21, 1998 - 0:0
MADRID Master of the bull ring, friend of Orson Welles and inspiration for Ernest Hemingway, Antonio Ordonez was hailed on the day of his funeral as the greatest matador of all time. Ordonez's ashes were to be scattered in the bull ring of his hometown of Ronda, the cradle of bullfighting, after a funeral mass in the andalusian capital of Seville on Sunday. Despite countless minor gorings and 27 serious injuries during a career spanning more than two decades, it was illness that killed Ordonez at the age of 66. (Reuter)
