Government preparing lawsuit against U.S.: Iranian official

May 10, 2016

TEHRAN – An Iranian official at the presidential center for international legal affairs has said that the government is preparing a lawsuit against the U.S. over the seizure of $2 billion of Iran’s assets.

“The government of prudence and hope is preparing a lawsuit at the international court due to the seizure of $2 billion of central bank by the U.S.,” Mohammad Jafar Ghanbari Jahromi told IRNA in an exclusive interview published on Tuesday.

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled on April 20 that almost $2 billion in frozen Iranian assets must be turned over to American families of people killed in the 1983 bombing of a U.S. Marine Corps barracks in Beirut and other attacks allegedly blamed on Iran.

Tehran has strongly objected to the ruling.
