102-Year-Old to Fight Belgian Local Election

BRUSSELS A 102-year-old woman will contest municipal elections in Belgium in October, hoping to win a six-year term in office, local media reported on Tuesday. Nathalie Van Loock will stand for the Gembel Party, which fights for local community interests, in Keerbergen, a small Flemish town 40 km (25 miles) northeast of the capital Brussels. "I'm very proud to be selected as a candidate and will fight for better conditions for elderly folk here," Van Loock said.
Party founder Erik Moris, who polled 4.8 percent of the votes, but failed to take a seat, when his party first contested the commune in 1994, said Van Loock's selection was a mark of respect for the elderly.
