Kharrazi Expresses Nation's Grief Over Austrian Train Disaster

TEHRAN Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi here Tuesday expressed condolences to his Austrian counterpart, Benita Ferrero-Waldner, for 159 people who died when a funicular train caught fire 600 miles into an Alpine tunnel on its way to a skiing resort in the mountain glaciers of Kitzsteinhorn in Kaprun, Austria.
Most of the victims were Austrians, Germans and Japanese. There were also a few Americans, army personnel detailed in Austria.
Twelve managed to escape the tragedy which was the country's worst peacetime disaster.
On behalf of the Iranian government and nation, Kharrazi expressed his sympathy to the Austrian government and bereaved families of the victims.
Reports from Kaprun said that Austrian rescue workers have pulled 66 bodies from the tunnel site of the train which became an inferno.
Officials said it could take weeks, or even months, to remove all the charred remains of victims.
