Artificial Heart Patient Dies in Texas

DANVERS, Mass. -- Abiomed Inc., maker of a self-contained artificial heart, on Friday said that the third person to receive the implant has died in a Texas hospital.
Bobby Harrison, 69, died at St. Luke's episcopal hospital in Houston after having the Abiocor replacement heart implanted on Sept. 26, Danvers, Massachusetts-based Abiomed said in a statement.
Harrison, who suffered a stroke on Feb. 1, was one of six people to receive the grapefruit-sized plastic and titanium Abiocor heart.
The hospital on Friday said he died of complications from the stroke.
The last person to die after receiving an artificial heart was a 74-year-old male patient at the Ucla Medical Center in Los Angeles. This patient was never identified.
