LJUBLJANA -- Slovenian alpine skier Mitja Kunc may miss the start of the World Cup in October after he broke his collarbone during training, the Slovenian Ski Association said on Monday.

The 30-year-old Kunc, who won a slalom bronze medal at the 2001 world championships, broke the bone on Friday while motor racing with his fellow skiers on a training course near Slovenj Gradec in northern Slovenia. He later underwent surgery in Maribor hospital.

"Kunc will leave the hospital tomorrow (Tuesday) and start light training on Wednesday or Thursday but his appearance at the first World Cup giant slalom in October is very questionable," Klemen Bergant, director of Slovenia's alpine skiing teams, told Reuters.

"However, he will be ready for the following slalom and giant slalom in the United States in November," he added.

The men's World Cup begins on the Soelden glacier in Austria on October 27 but then takes a break until two races in Park City in the U.S. on November 22 and 24.
