INDIANAPOLIS -- Jermaine O'Neal scored 26 points and hauled down 18 rebounds as the Indiana Pacers denied the Dallas Mavericks a share of basketball history on Thursday, downing the Mavericks 110-98 to end Dallas' 14-game winning streak to star the season.

Dallas (14-1) fell one win short of matching the all-time NBA record for consecutive wins to start a season, a record shared by the 1948-49 Washington Capitols and the 1993-94 Houston Rockets.

Al Harrington added 21 points to Indiana's offense while Ron Artest added 20 and Brad Miller 16.

Artest scored the first 10 points of the game for Indiana (12-2), owners of the best record in the Eastern Conference and second best record in the NBA.

Artest also had 10 rebounds as the Pacers out-rebounded the Midwest division leaders 54-36.

The Pacers took the ball inside all night, scoring most of their points on layups to take a 15-point lead at one point in the third quarter.

Steve Nash had 29 points, nine assists and seven rebounds for the Mavericks, while scoring seven straight points at one point in the fourth quarter to bring Dallas to within eight points, Reuters reported.

Dirk Nowitzki added 17 points, eight rebounds and four assists for Dallas, while Michael Finley added 16 points for the losers.
