Del Piero Set for Juventus Return at Basel

MILAN -- Juventus playmaker Alessandro del Piero is set to make his return from injury in the Italian club's Champions League game against Basel today.

Del Piero has been out of action with a thigh injury since early February, missing Juve's two Champions League defeats by Manchester United and last week's 3-2 win over Deportivo Coruna.

Juventus Coach Marcello Lippi named Del Piero in the 21-man traveling party for today's game in Switzerland, and he could be eased back into action if qualification looks certain for the Turin side.

Juventus need to avoid defeat by four goals or more against the Swiss team to ensure their place in the last eight behind already-qualified group winners Manchester United.

Juve's Dutch midfielder Edgar Davids is suspended, while striker Marco di Vaio and midfielder Antonio Conte miss the game through injury, Reuters reported.

Prior to his injury Del Piero had been in excellent form with 12 goals in Serie A, but Juventus have continued to shine in the domestic league without him. The Italian champions beat Modena 3-0 on Saturday to maintain their three-point lead at the top of the table over Inter Milan.
