MP Says Hopes Majlis, GC to Settle Disputes Over Elections Law

TEHRAN - A member of Majlis Judicial Committee, Mohammad-Kazem Mortazavi, here on Saturday expressed hope that the discrepancies that the Guardian Council (GC) has indicated in rejecting the Majlis bill to amend the elections law be removed once the bill is referred to the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission.

Mortazavi, talking to IRNA, said the Majlis would better debate the GC's arguments to reject the bills in expert committees, stressing that the presence of a member of the council in the committees would help settle the disputes.

He said resorting to referendum over the Majlis-GC disputes was the "natural right" of the people and the Parliament, adding that the disputes, though, could be simply resolved in expert committees.

The MP said the issue of GC's Approbatory Supervision over the elections constituted the main dispute between the Majlis and the council, and echoed concerns that the definitions of such supervision might bar many candidates from running for the Seventh Majlis elections.

"Some are worried that the GC might use the prerogative of Approbatory Supervision as a means to decide on behalf of people and qualify just those whom it considers fit for state posts," he said.
