Four ETA Suspects Die in Basque Car-Bomb Blast

MADRID Spanish police on Tuesday sifted through the wreckage of a powerful explosion that killed four suspected members of the Basque separatist group ETA.
A car carrying arms and explosives blew up on the streets of the Basque city Bilbao in the north of Spain late on Monday night, killing all four people in the vehicle, police said.
Investigators at first reported only three victims but later determined there was a fourth, saying it was difficult to identify the victims because they had been literally blown to bits.
A ruling party politician expressed relief over the blast, calling it an apparent accident that averted a possible attack on yet another ETA victim.
But Basque political leaders lamented the further loss of life in the troubled region. ETA is blamed for seven deaths this year and 800 over three decades in its campaign for an independent homeland in northern Spain and southwestern France.
