Iraq Says Security Council a "Paralyzed" Body
June 7, 2001 - 0:0
BAGHDAD Iraq on Wednesday attacked the United Nations Security Council, saying it had failed to honor its commitments toward Iraq.
"The Security Council has become a paralyzed system and a name void of any meaning," Iraqi Vice President Taha Yassin Ramadan told reporters after attending the first session of the Arab League's Arab Economic Union Council in Baghdad.
Ramadan said Iraq had implemented "unjust" Security Council resolutions, but the council had not honored its promise and lifted sanctions imposed as punishment for Baghdad's invasion of Kuwait in 1990.
Iraq wants the sanctions lifted unconditionally, arguing that it has fulfilled its obligations under Security Council resolutions to eliminate its weapons of mass destruction.
