MPs to Continue Debates Over Majlis Electoral Bill on Sunday
The Majlis had earlier reviewed 15 cases that the GC had blamed for rejecting the bill, and further debates over the issue were delayed until after Majlis summer recess.
The bill along with another one seeking to increase the presidential powers was submitted by President Mohammad Khatami’s Government to Majlis last September and was accordingly approved by the Majlis.
However, the GC has rejected the twin bills for inconsistencies and discrepancies against the Constitution and the Sharia law of Islam.
The bill on amending the electoral law has been basically drawn up to address the GC's prerogative of Approbatory Supervision, which enables the council to disqualify candidates, whom it considers as unfit for state posts from running in elections.
The government has cited the bill as aiming to increase people's participation in elections and reduce wanton disqualification of elections hopefuls.
