Plucky Poland Upends Brazil in World U-21 Volleyball Final

TEHRAN (Mehr News Agency) – Poland gatecrash Brazil’s party by a 3-2 victory in the final of 2003 FIVB 12th Men’s Under-21 Volleyball Championship in this capital city Sunday.

In a pulsating golden showdown in the 12,000-seater hall of Azadi Sports Complex, 10km west of Tehran, the Polish side ended Brazil’s winning streak and won the South American side 3-2.

The first set was won by the Polish, who struggled to a 25-23 victory over the five-times champion Brazil.

With sizzling serves, powerful spikes, and impermeable defense, Brazil fought back to win the second game 25-20.

Eyeing the top title, the plucky Poland overcame the yellows with a two-point superiority in the third cutthroat set.

Brazil leveled the match 2-2 when it managed to beat the Poles 25-22 in the fourth set, setting up a deciding fifth game.

Both sides served and spiked very cautiously to minimize their errors in a thrilling game.

Poland outpointed Brazil with superb defense in back field, celebrating its 15-11 win over Brazil and the world title.

Bulgaria battered South Korea in the third-place clash held before the final.

The Koreans were stunned when Bulgaria handed the Asian team a 3-0 humiliating defeat.

The bronze medal went to the Bulgarians with a 25-19, 25-16, 25-21 victory.

Iran won the sixth title as it lost to Russia.

Russia gave Iran a 3-0 rout in front of home fans, standing fifth. Russia won 25-20, 25-19, 25-19.

In a lower-tiered match played Sunday morning, Serbia and Montenegro stood seventh above Germany.

Serbia trounced Germany in three straight games 25-16, 25-22, 25-21.

Sixteen teams of Iran, Venezuela, South Korea, Egypt, Russia, China, Germany, India, Brazil, Poland Canada, Tunisia, Serbia and Montenegro, Italy, Bulgaria, and Slovakia competed in the world event that started August 23.
