Iran, Pak Sea Border Officials to Meet in December

ISLAMABAD (IRNA) -- The border security meeting between Iranian officials and their Pakistani counterpart will be held in Iran on December 3, official APP news agency reported Wednesday.

Director (Operations) Maritime Security Agency, Commander Muhammad Zakir said that Pakistani delegation will include officials of Pakistan Coast Guard and Maritime Security Agency who will hold talk with Iranian Coast Guard to further strengthen the exchange of information to halt smuggling through sea route.

"Basically we would discuss the border security issue to stop smuggling through sea route, and the problems being faced by fishermen of both the countries," Zakir said.

He said that the nature of problem the fishermen of Pakistan and Iran had been facing were quite different to that of Indian fishermen.

The director operations MSA said that holding these frequent meetings help to further improve exchange of information between the two countries.

The director operations while appreciating the cooperation of Iranian coast guards said that it enabled MSA to contain smuggling through sea route, which is a very delicate process.

He said that holding of these meetings are a continuous process to help further improve anti smuggling measures in which emphasis is laid on improving exchange of information.

MSA has submitted a Ten Year Master Plan to the government for approval, he said quoted by APP. "The plan includes acquisition of helicopters, large size ships, high-speed boats and modern equipment."

He said that if this plan is approved the MSA will be very successful in carrying out effective surveillance at sea even in rough weather.

Zakir said that the international agencies including UNDCP are also extending help to MSA to curb the menace of drug smuggling.
