Tehran Mayor Calls For Better Urban Planning
Speaking at a meeting of the Tehran Engineering System Organization (TESO), he added that scientific urban planning requires the continuous, comprehensive, and coordinated cooperation of specialists from diverse fields, although this has never been the case in Tehran, as evidenced by the disharmonious structure of the city.
He went on to say that building a city in which all citizens feel comfortable and secure requires various types of expertise, which, for the most part, TESO can provide.
Tehran is facing many problems such as traffic congestion and the threat of earthquakes, he added.
Ahmadinejad said that despite their many, TESO engineers and specialists should not forget about urban problems, since people believe that all of the disorganization of the city is the result of the incompetence of urban planners and engineers.
He noted that there are many regulations about construction methods for buildings but few regulations regarding the appearance of buildings, which has resulted in the mishmash of architectural styles evident in the general appearance of the city. Ahmadinejad added, "To solve this problem, we need comprehensive plans which should be formulated by specialists and experienced individuals."
He said that better urban planning could prevent unqualified individuals and profiteers from interfering in construction projects.
He referred to the beauty of Iranian and Islamic architecture, adding that many ancient bridges and mosques are still standing after many years, having withstood several earthquakes, but many newer buildings do not last as long.
He suggested that modern architectural sciences and technology should be used to construct a developed city in harmony with Iranian cultural norms.
In conclusion, the mayor said that the Tehran Municipality will make efforts to solve the problems of TESO but expects the organization to also make serious efforts on behalf of the citizens.
