BRUSSELS (IRNA) -- European Union High Representative for a common foreign and security policy Javier Solana stressed Tuesday that the only solution to Iran's nuclear issues was a diplomatic one and called for the recognition of Iran's important role through diplomacy and dialogue.

Speaking in the European Parliament in Brussels, Solana noted that Iran is playing an important role in Iraq and has an historical influence on Afghanistan and also influences the peace process in the Middle East.

Solana called for recognition of Iran by the international community through the mechanism of dialogue and diplomacy and urged Iran to respect the rules of the game.

In the coming days he said the European side will be holding a meeting with the permanent members of the UN Security Council to finalize a SC resolution on Iran and the package that the EU is to offer to Tehran and hoped that the package will be interesting for the Iranians.

Commenting on Iran-U.S. ties he said the logical conclusion is that the break in contacts between the two sides for the last 20 years should come to an end "because Iran is a very important player".

Solana said it will be a "good idea" if U.S. and Iran have contacts over Iraq.

Referring to the Russian and Chinese opposition to any UNSC resolution that could lead to any sanction or open the way for military strike, Solana said that he was aware of the difficulties for Russia and China if Chapter 7 is included in the resolution.

The EU foreign policy chief underlined that the Iran's nuclear issue can only be resolved through UNSC and diplomacy

China urges attention to Iran's demands in nuclear case

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao also on Tuesday urged the international community to pay attention to the demands and concerns of Iran on its nuclear case.

Liu, speaking to domestic and foreign reporters at his weekly press conference, once again reiterated his country's support for settlement of Iran's nuclear case through diplomatic channels.

He said Chinese Deputy Foreign Minister Dai Bingguo will attend a meeting of the 5+1 Group in Vienna on Thursday.

The Chinese spokesman said his country's stance on Iran's nuclear case was transparent, saying Beijing believes the issue should be settled through diplomatic negotiation and in a way that would protect the interest of all sides.

Liu urged the negotiating sides to present constructive proposals to try to resolve the dispute focusing on the need to resume nuclear talks.

Iran has the right to use peaceful nuclear energy while staying committed to its undertakings under international treaties, he added.
