Almost one-third of Bosnians unemployed: survey
The study, which was conducted by Bosnia's statistics bureau according to European standards, revealed 31.1 percent unemployment, with 366,000 people out of work.
Despite coming in about 10 percent lower than previous official data, the survey was the first to include Bosnia's grey economy that makes up an estimated 40 percent of the country's gross domestic product.
"The previous data about unemployment rate of between 40 and 42 percent relied only on the number of persons registered with the employment bureaus and did not take into account part-time or seasonal workers or the grey economy," said the head of the agency, Zdenko Milinovic.
The survey, carried out with a sample of 10,000 randomly selected households using European statistics methodology, showed that just under a half of all those employed were engaged in the service sector.
More than 70 percent of unemployed had been unable to find a job for over two years and a majority were between 25 and 50 years of age.
By the end of Bosnia's three-and-a-half year war, an estimated 200,000 people had been killed and 2.2 million of the country's four million people were left without homes.
Despite an influx of 5.1 billion dollars in foreign aid, a fifth of Bosnian population still lives in poverty.
