Peace Corps to launch first mission in Cambodia
They will focus on training Cambodian teachers in English language instruction, according to the U.S. embassy, as well as participating in community improvement programs in the rural areas where they will serve.
Shortly after arriving, the volunteers will undertake several months of intensive Khmer-language training before being assigned to one of five provinces.
"We are excited to begin this historic new program for the Peace Corps in Cambodia," Peace Corps Director Ron Tschetter said in a statement.
"We are enthusiastic about this opportunity to build lasting friendships and a mutual understanding with the people of Cambodia," he added.
Since 1961, more than 187,000 people have volunteered with the Peace Corps in 139 countries.
