TEHRAN -- The director of the Election Headquarters of the Interior Ministry said here on Saturday that the administration plans to present the Majlis a double urgency bill on changing the regulations for parliamentary elections.

The current law requires government officials to resign six months before registering as candidates for parliamentary elections, Ali-Asghar Karandish told the Mehr News Agency.

According to the new bill, candidates would have to leave their government posts only two months before the election, he explained.

If administrative officials resign six months prior to elections, the country will face a management crisis, he noted.

Administrative issues suffer during the campaign season, and thus the administration’s new bill has suggested that candidates be allowed to retain their government posts until two months before the parliamentary elections, he said.

The eighth Maljis elections are scheduled to be held in winter 2008.
