Russia restricted by U.S.

TEHRAN (FNA) -- Americans have incarcerated Russia in an area surrounded by the NATO and the North Pole icebergs, Ali Akbar Velayati, an International affairs advisor to the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution, said.

Addressing a meeting of the political officials of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) in the northeastern city of Mashhad on Saturday, Velayati described struggles against the Untied States' expansionism as a serious challenge for the Islamic Republic in the era following the decomposition of the former Soviet Union. "The U.S. has extended the scope of its presence to the borders of China through the expansion of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and surrounded Russia," he said, adding, "And it has devised many plots, including the Great Middle-East plan and the establishment of the American type of democracy, to suppress Islamic vigilance which is centered in Iran and to expand its influence and hegemony in the Middle-East."

The former Iranian foreign minister stressed that simple negotiations with the U.S. could not resolve the problems and wide differences existing between the Islamic Republic and the United States.

"There are some gullible individuals who think Americans will give in to Iran and problems will be solved if we sit to the negotiating table with the U.S. Since decades ago, that is even during the era of the former Soviet Union, Russians have been negotiating with the U.S., but we observe that now Americans have called Russians to come to the negotiating table to discuss deployment of the U.S. missile shield in Europe.

"At present, Americans have incarcerated Russia between the NATO and the North Pole icebergs, and they have downgraded the former super power Soviet Union into a country that they have even entered into its sanctuary," advisor to Ayatollah Khamenei said.

Velayati mentioned that the Untied States' conditions for the normalization of ties with Iran, such as the stop of Iran's opposition to the Arab-Israeli compromise plan, recognition of the Zionist regime of Israel, observation of human rights on the basis of western criteria and the pursuit and establishment of the American-type of democracy, are all aimed at disarming the Islamic Republic.

And once they materialized this goal, that is taking the most important weapon and power factor from the Islamic Republic, they will dominate the Islamic world and force the present wave of Islamism into disappointment, he added.

Velayati also underscored that any plan for negotiations between Tehran and Washington whose terms and conditions are specified by Americans would definitely lead to the defeat and failure of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
