Anthropology museum opens in Torbat-e Jam

TEHRAN -- A permanent museum of anthropology opened June 10 at the historical site of Jam Caravansary in Torbat-e Jam.

The opening ceremony was attended by the director of the Khorasan Razavi Cultural Heritage, Tourism, and Handicrafts Department, Mohammad Mokkaramifar.

He said that the museum of anthropology is a very necessary requirement for keeping permanent records of the varying lifestyles of people of different regions and for introducing their occupations, manner of dressing and cultures.

Nomadic tents, regional musical instruments and the tools and paraphernalia of various customary occupations and traditions are on display in this museum.

Mokkaramifar noted that 10 museums with different themes will be set up in Khorasan Razavi province during the present Iranian year (Mar 21 07 until Mar 20 08).

The ruins of the Jam Caravansary belong to the Timurid era. The caravansary has four porches and three stoops which lead to separate rooms and its frontage consists of three towers and a bulwark. There is also a main alcove which forms the core of the caravansary.

Torbat-e Jam is located 160 kilometers from Mashhad in Khorasan Razavi Province and has a population of 260000.
