Mahdavi Kani reelected as CCA secretary general

TEHRAN -- Ayatollah Mohammad-Reza Mahdavi Kani has been re-elected as the secretary general of the Combatant Clergy Association (CCA) for another five-year term, the association spokesman Gholamreza Mesbahi-Moqaddam said on Saturday.
In an interview with the Mehr News Agency Mesbahi-Moqaddam said a recent meeting between senior clerics of the association and members of the United Conservative Front suggests that there is no discord among conservative groups.As the country is approaching for March 14 parliamentary elections the rival factions in the reformist and conservative camps are preparing themselves for a contest.
Mesbahi-Moqaddam said if the United Conservative Front observes the principals set at the meeting the association will back the front’s candidates in parliamentary elections.
The Combatant Clergy Association (Jame'e-ye Rowhaniyat-e Mobarez) is a pragmatic-conservative clerical party which held the majority in the 4th and 5th parliaments. It was founded in 1977 by a group of clerics with intentions to use cultural approach to overthrow the Shah.
Expediency Council chairman Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani and former secretary of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Hassan Rohani are members of the association.
