TEHRAN -- Iranian Prosecutor General Qorban-Ali Dorri Najafabadi ordered his office to investigate the destruction of the Khark Achaemenid inscription on Tuesday.

The decision was taken in response to a letter sent by Iran’s Student Association for Archaeological Sciences asking the prosecutor general to take up the case, the Persian service of CHN reported on Tuesday.
Last week, Bushehr Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts Department Director Ahmad Dashti announced that the BCHTHD has filed a lawsuit against some suspects.
The cuneiform inscription, which has been etched on a piece of uneven rock encrusted with coral, was vandalized by unknown persons on May 29.
The valuable relic was discovered during a road construction project on the island in the Persian Gulf in mid-November 2007. The rock, measuring 85x116cm, has become detached from its original terrain.
Based on the photos of the artifact taken after the act of vandalism, the translator of the inscription, Rasul Bashshash, said earlier this week that about three of the five lines of the text have been obliterated, adding that 40 to 50 percent of the inscription has been damaged.
He also stated that any attempt to restore the inscription would be unscientific and could lead to distortion of the text
