MP warns London about extradition of ex-diplomat

TEHRAN -- A senior MP warned here on Saturday that Tehran-London relations will be seriously harmed if Britain decides to extradite former Iranian diplomat Nosratollah Tajik to the United States.
“The extradition of Tajik to the United States will surely have a very great destructive effect on mutual relations,” Alaeddin Borujerdi, who chairs the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, told British Ambassador Geoffrey Adams during a meeting in Tehran. With the help of U.S. agents from the Department of Homeland Security, Tajik, the former Iranian ambassador to Jordan, was arrested in November 2006 and accused of being Britain’s link in a £1.5m illegal arms network spanning the United States, the Netherlands, and Turkey.
In April 2008, the British High Court upheld a former ruling made in April 2007 that Tajik should be sent to the U.S. to face charges, forcing his lawyer to launch an appeal.
Tajik suffers from heart disease and the British court had given him until June 11 to get medical treatment before his extradition to the United States.
Tajik’s extradition is not a normal judiciary issue, Borujerdi said, adding, “Tajik’s case has become a national issue” and Iranians expect to see him released as soon as possible.
Adams stated that London is prepared to provide any assistance to Tehran to resolve the issue.
Borujerdi also seriously objected to the UK’s recent decision to remove the Mujahedin Khalq Organization (MKO) from its list of terrorist groups, stating, “This move helps promote terrorism in the region and the entire world” and will surely give Iranians a bad impression about Britain.
British lawmakers decided to lift a ban on the MKO on Monday, following a court decision last month that ruled the government had to remove it from a terrorist blacklist.
Britain wants good relations with Iran and does not intend to undermine its ties with the country, the British ambassador noted.
Adams also said that the British government believes the MKO is a terrorist group
