TEHRAN (Press TV) -- Iranian President Mahmud Ahmadinejad has been invited to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in the Tajik capital.

“The Iranian president will depart for Dushanbe on August 27 at the official invitation of Tajik President Emomali Rakhmon to attend the SCO summit,” Iran’s Ambassador to Tajikistan, Ali-Asghar She’rdoust, told IRNA Saturday.
The day-long SCO summit is scheduled to open in Dushanbe on August 28.
The diplomat said that President Ahmadinejad is scheduled to hold talks with a number of senior officials attending the summit and that the second meeting between Iran-Afghanistan-Tajikistan would also be held on the sidelines of the conference.
The SCO was founded to oppose the U.S. interference in Central Asia by developing regional security cooperation between member states China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
The Islamic Republic of Iran, India, Mongolia and Pakistan are currently observer members of the organization but Iran recently requested full membership status.
