TEHRAN -- The Islamic Republic of Iran is attempting to close all its borders to drug traffickers, National Police Chief Brigadier General Esmaeil Ahmadi Moghaddam stated here on Tuesday.

In a meeting with German ambassador to Iran Herbert Honsowitz, Ahmadi Moghadam said that Iran will make use of all its resources to completely close its borders to drug smugglers within the next two years.
Iran is tackling the issue head-on, and about two tons of illicit drugs are seized every day in this great battle, he stated.
Any positive step improving the political and economic situation in Afghanistan would be helpful, he noted, saying, “The Islamic Republic of Iran is ready to train and cooperate with Afghanistan’s police.”
He called on Germany and the Mini-Dublin Group to increase their constructive cooperation in the operational, technical, and logistical areas, and added, “Tehran expects Berlin to play a constructive role in the European Union so that they put their words into action.”
The Mini-Dublin Group consists of a number of European and other countries that are cooperating in the campaign against illicit drugs.
The EU hasn’t done much so far, and, in light of Iran’s efforts and sacrifices in this regard, “Iran expects the EU and the world to do more than just thank Iran,” the national police chief said.
Ambassador Honsowitz called for greater cooperation between Germany and Iran, saying, “We are trying to work side by side with Iran in the campaign against illicit drugs.”
All European countries are grateful to the Islamic Republic of Iran and aware of the problems that Iran has experienced due to its proximity to Afghanistan, he added
