TOKYO — Iran’s special envoy submitted President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s letter to Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso on Thursday, a Japanese government official said.

Japan expects that Iran will play a constructive role in stabilizing Gaza, Aso told Samare Hashemi.
Aso said he thinks it is important for Iran, as a major power in the Middle East, to act responsibly in the world and that Japan is prepared to cooperate.
“It is important to make the cease-fire (between Israel and Hamas) durable and I hope that Iran will play a constructive role,” Aso insisted.
Aso also said he expects Iran, as a neighboring country, to play a major role in rebuilding Afghanistan and that Japan would like to discuss the matter.
For his part, Hashemi said Iran seeks to establish closer ties with Japan so as to achieve peace and stability in the Middle East, including Gaza.
