TEHRAN -- Iranian chess Grandmaster Ehsan Ghaem Maghami defeated Russian GM and former world champion Anatoly Karpov 10/5 to 9/5 out of 20 games last night.

Ghaem Maghami played the Russian in three classic, rapid and blitz events in a six-day tournament, consisting of 20 matches.
The Iranian GM was awarded $26,000 while Karpov earned $13,000. Mohammad Aliabadi, the head of Iran’s Physical Education Organization (PEO) presented a Peugeot 405 to Ghaem Maghami in recognition of this victory.
Karpov was the undisputed World Champion from 1975 to 1985, repeatedly challenged to regain the title from 1986 to 1990, and then was FIDE World Champion from 1993 to 1999.
Ghaem Maghami, who has participated in more than 40 international events, has an Elo rating of 2604.
The matches were judged by a referee from the Philippines.
