TEHRAN – Ayatollah Mohammad-Ali Taskhiri said here on Sunday that the Assembly of Experts epitomizes a “religious democracy”.
The assembly provides a guarantee that the Islamic Republic system follows the Islamic line, Taskhiri added. He said the responsibilities of the Assembly of Experts are to appoint the Supreme Leader, monitor his performance and elect five persons for the Constitution Review Commission.
On trade of accusations by the presidential contenders, the ayatollah said the election atmosphere must not be polluted by immoralities.
He urged everyone to observe the Islamic codes in elections, saying that mendacities and aspersions are not proper to an Islamic system.
Taskhiris is running for a seat at the Assembly of Experts. The assembly by-election will be held simultaneously with the presidential polls on June 12.
Elections for the 86-member Assembly are held every eight years. Only clerics can join the assembly and candidates for election are vetted by the Guardian Council
