Amid intense public scrutiny, Iranian forensic experts investigate the mysterious death of opposition demonstrators in detention.
The Iranian Legal Medicine Organization released a statement on Wednesday saying that it is still working on the case of the prisoners who died while in police custody.“The deaths of the inmates are under intense analysis and investigation … the final results will be brought to the attention of the government,” the statement read.
Iran saw a wave of street violence after demonstrators gathered in thousands to protest the results of the June 12 presidential election. At least 20 people were killed and many others were injured in the protests.
The statement comes after grim revelations surfaced about the state of the opposition demonstrators in custody -- particularly those who were taken to the Kahrizak detention center in southern Tehran.
After being found a 'substandard prison', Kahrizak was closed upon the order of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.
