Iran dismisses role in Baghdad carnage

At least 95 people were killed in terrorist attacks that struck the ministries of finance and foreign affairs in Baghdad on August 19.
Iran has categorically denied claims by a former Iraqi official that Tehran intervened in Iraq's domestic affairs and had a role in the recent cruel carnage in Baghdad.""Iran condemns all acts of terrorism in Iraq and rejects the baseless allegations of Gen. Mohammed Shahwani, the former head of Iraqi intelligence, and his aide,"" said Mohammad Mir Ali Mohammadi, Press Secretary of Mission of Iran to the United Nations, on Wednesday.
His remarks came after Shahwani, in an interview with The Washington Post, alleged that Iran was interfering in internal affairs of Iraq and had a role in the recent Baghdad bombings in which scores of civilians were killed.
""Both the Iraqi government and U.S. officials have attributed the recent attacks in Baghdad to Baathist and al-Qaeda extremists who oppose the Iraqi government,"" the Iranian diplomat said.
He added that the seemingly daily-made allegations against Iran overlooks the fact that instability in Iraq affects Iran's own security and that these allegations are being used to justify the presence of foreign forces inside Iraq against the will of the Iraqi people.
""It is unfortunate that the column (in the daily) adopted the absurd anti-Iran allegations of the U.S.-trained Gen. Shahwani, who is famous for years of fabricating allegations against Iran and who was sacked for the security lapses that fostered the recent carnage in Iraq,"" Mohammadi said.
""Contrary to these groundless allegations, Iran fully respects Iraq's sovereignty, strictly adheres to the principle of non-interference in Iraq's internal affairs and wishes for a stable and prosperous Iraq,"" he concluded.
