KARACHI: The Crime Investigation Department (CID) of Sindh police claimed on Thursday to have arrested a key figure of the outlawed Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan.

A CID official identified the man as Alam Mehsud and said he was a close aide of TTP leader Baitullah Mehsud who was killed in a US drone attack in August last year. The arrest was made on a tip-off from Surjani Town area of Karachi.
The official said that investigations were in early stages, adding that information received during interrogation would help police to trace Alam Mehsud’s associates living in the city.
In another development in Karachi Pakistani security forces have detained Agha Jan Mohtasim, a key Afghan Taliban leader, in the southern port city of Karachi, local news reports quoted unnamed Pakistani intelligence officials as saying on Thursday.
Mohtasim, who was finance minister in the Taliban government before the U.S.-led invasion in 2001, is believed to have close links to Mullah Omar, the head of the Afghan Taliban.
If confirmed, Mohtasim's detention would be the latest in a series of arrests made in a recent crackdown on the Taliban in Pakistan. Those arrested in the crackdown include Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, the insurgents group's deputy leader, and Mullah Abdul Salam, the shadow Taliban governor of Afghanistan's Kunduz province
