Iran hails direct Kosovo-Serbia talks

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast says Tehran hopes talks between Kosovo and Serbia will help restore peace and stability in the Balkans.

Last week Serbia and Kosovo held their first round of direct talks since the later declared independence from Belgrade in 2008 in Brussels, Belgium.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran welcomes the beginning of direct talks between Serbia and Kosovo in line with the UN General Assembly’s resolution,” Mehmanparast said on Sunday.
In 2010, following Kosovo’s declaration of independence from Serbia, which sparked a serious worldwide debate and upon a request by Serbia, the UN General assembly asked the International Court of Justice to determine whether the breakaway region had breached international law.
Sixty-nine countries including the U.S. and most EU member states have recognized Kosovo’s independence, rejecting Serbia’s claims that the move violated its territorial integrity.
Mehmanparast added that Iran considers the continuation of talks in a constructive atmosphere and based on realities as an opportunity for the realization of the demands of the two nations in line with international law.
The talks’ agenda included Kosovo’s problems such as telecommunications, customs procedures, property issues, air traffic control and regional trade and cooperation.
